Human and animal food & supplementation
Microalgae are an important source of nutritious and healthy compounds, being used in the form of dry biomass or pills for direct human consumption or used to extract bioactive compounds, antioxidants, pigments, lipids, proteins, or others. The best-known species for human consumption are Chlorella sp. and Spirulina. They can also be used as an ingredient for animal feed.
The natural pigments astaxanthin, ß-carotene, fucoxanthin or phycocyanin are extracted from different microalgae for many applications in the food industry, nutraceuticals or as a food supplement.
