Wastewater and Effluent Treatment
Microalgae have natural mechanisms to absorb organic and inorganic compounds dissolved in the water as nutrients for photosynthesis or for heterotrophic metabolism. The high adaptability capacity of these organisms and their remarkable growth rate allow them to be used in the treatment of water and effluents with a high concentration of nutrients, coming from different industries, or from aquatic systems that need some type of (bio)remediation. Nitrogen compounds, phosphates, heavy metals and others can be metabolized or captured by microalgae and effectively removed from the water. Moreover, these organisms also contribute to greater oxygenation of aquatic systems.
